The story
The Alfa Romeo 2000 and 2600 Spider were Alfa's big open cars at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s, with bodies designed and built by Touring in Milan: a long, clean line, a scoop on the bonnet and four snug seats under the hood.
The book tells the restoration of a 2000 Spider. It arrived white, and under the paint the rust had done its work: floor, wheel arches and lower panels. In the workshop it was stripped to bare metal, repaired, rebuilt with overhauled mechanics and left red, with a black hood and grey interior.
The restoration step by step
From rust to Alfa red
- Step 1 of 6
How it arrived
Outdoors, complete but tired: bonnet without paint, interior to redo and, under the carpets, a floor that was barely there.
- Step 2 of 6
The bare shell
Mechanics, interior and paint come off: the bare shell shows everything. Wheel arches, floor and inner structures were rusted through in several places.
- Step 3 of 6
New floor and underbody
The rotten sections are cut out and the floor rebuilt in new steel, welded in place. The underbody is then protected and painted black.
- Step 4 of 6
The mechanics
Engine stripped piece by piece, gearbox overhauled, drum brakes rebuilt with shoes and wheel cylinders in good order.
- Step 5 of 6
Red paint and reassembly
The body is painted red, then engine, wiring, dashboard and instruments go back in place.
- Step 6 of 6
Seats and panels
The seats are rebuilt from the base: springs, new padding and then the grey cover tailored to fit; the door panels are remade too.
