The story

The doors read 'Antonio Pigafetta', after the man from Vicenza who chronicled the first voyage around the world with Magellan; the body says 'A truck around the world' and 'Un camion per il mondo'. This is the truck of the round-the-world expedition: a 4x4 with a windowed container, covered in the stickers of the continents and the sponsors.

When it reached Mimmo, the journey showed everywhere: rust in the cab pillars and floor, a rear rack eaten by rust, brakes and axles to redo. Container off with the crane, chassis repainted, cab panels remade, then the orange livery with the expedition lettering back in its place.

The restoration step by step

From the end of the journey to a fresh livery

  1. Step 1 of 6

    How it arrived

Livery and stickers all still there, but marked by the miles: rear rack eaten by rust, cab panels rusted through around the headlamps and in the corners.

  2. Step 2 of 6

    The container comes off

The container is lifted off with a crane, leaving the truck with just its cab on the bare chassis. Now the engine, the chassis and everything underneath are in plain view.

  3. Step 3 of 6

    Brakes and axles

Hubs, drums, leaf springs and wheel cylinders are taken off, cleaned and checked one by one on the bench.

    The cab metalwork

Pillars, floor and headlamp housings were rotten: the metal is cut back to sound steel and new panels, shaped on the original part, are welded in.

    Black chassis and reassembly

The chassis goes back to black, with tanks and toolbox in their places. Then the cab, already painted orange, is lowered on.

    The expedition livery

Doors, cab and container repainted, then the expedition lettering and stickers put back where they were: the name Antonio Pigafetta, the 68, the continents, the sponsors.
